From the outside looking in, there is something mysterious about a 17th Century Hôtel Particulier, tucked away in the medieval quarter of an ancient town, protected by its high stone walls and tall imposing gates. These beautiful windows are the same as those in the entrance hall with their feature round glass windows in the upper part of the frame, allowing a flood of light from the south into the room. At the far end of the drawing-room is an open fireplace, with a high and ornate chimney breast, featuring a decorative violin in plaster, surrounded by a wreath of leaves and picked out in gold paint. The floor is carpeted, the high panelled ceilings painted white. The original doorframes are also panelled and add to the style of the room. This is a bright and sunny room, offering a vast amount of space for formal entertaining. The salon opens directly on to the formal dining-room, which is equally gracious in style and size. The fireplace is not currently in use but features the same decorative chimney breast with a golden lyre. The dining-room has a fantastic large cupboard with original doors which have been painted from an 18th century palette of muted greyish-blue and white. French doors open to the garden. So much for formal entertainment which takes place between the main reception and dining-room. Now for the family room or ''snug'' - which is a cosy albeit spacious room where there is space for a large television screen on which to enjoy the cricket, comfortable sofas, and two dog beds for the ''children'' of the house-hold, two wire-haired terriers, who live the life of pampered pooches between garden and bed. There is also a large stone-clad open fireplace piled high with logs and the promise of a blazing fire before a film on a winter's evening. The walls are lined with book-shelves and the ambiance here is relaxed and a lovely contrast to the more formal rooms next door. An inner hallway leads to a downstairs cloakroom/WC. On this level we find the main grand entrance-hall, with its fabulous stone staircase, as grand as any to be found in the department, even in the most opulent of buildings.
